Steve Ortmayer
Director of Player Personnel

“Steve is one of the great personnel and football operations guys in the country, and we are proud to have him join us in Memphis,” said Steve Ehrhart. “This will send a message to our Memphis fans that we will have a first-class organization, and there is nobody better to build a team than Steve Ortmayer.”

Ortmayer has an outstanding background in both college football and the NFL. He was head of football operations for three different NFL franchises. In addition to his administrative duties, he has coached extensively at the NFL level as well as collegiately, at the University of Colorado and Georgia Tech.

He was instrumental in the success of the Oakland/L.A. Raiders franchise spanning three decades. He served in a number of capacities ranging from assistant coach to Director of Football Operations. The Raiders had a great record during his tenure and twice he was on the sidelines when the Raiders won Super Bowl XV and XVIII.

In 1987 he moved to the San Diego Chargers as General Manager. He is credited with signing the young players which led to the Chargers’ resurgence in the early 1990s.

In 1995 as Vice President of Football Operations of the L.A. Rams, Ortmayer oversaw the move from Los Angeles to St. Louis. During his tenure with the Rams, he helped lay the foundation for the team’s winning Super Bowl run last year.

Ortmayer, who was in Memphis for the announcement, said, "the excitement and commitment of the Memphis community, the XFL, the WWF and NBC is something I have not seen in many years. We are looking forward to putting an exciting and competitive team on the field immediately."

Ortmayer has coached in 5 college bowl games and for eight NFL playoff teams, in addition to his two Super Bowl wins with the Raiders. Now in his 26th season in the professional football ranks, Ortmayer brings a wealth of operations and personnel knowledge that will certainly enhance the Memphis team.

The Memphis organization has already received thousands of reservations for game tickets through XFL.com, the league’s official web site. Fans can receive their priority number by logging onto www.all-xfl.com/xfl and filling out the ticket form. The team will host five home games at the Liberty Bowl commencing on February 3, 2001.
