Maniax open first ever camp
Team puts on pads for two workouts

The Memphis Maniax had another first in franchise history on Wednesday when the 70-player squad opened its inaugural training camp and donned full gear for the first time in two-a-day workouts.

Memphis ran brisk two-hour practice sessions in both the morning and afternoon at Foothill High School in the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson. Unlike the poor weather conditions the team encountered in its recent mini-camp in Memphis last month, Wednesday’s workouts were conducted in sunny 60-degree weather. The double-session day marked the first of 24 days in training camp prior to the team’s return to Memphis in late January to prepare for the inaugural season opener at Birmingham on Feb. 4.

Maniax Head Coach Kippy Brown was extremely pleased with the efforts on day one. “We had two very good workouts today and I know that the players loved getting the chance to put on the gear and get down to business,” said Brown, who completed his first day as a head coach on the practice field. “Our staff and players worked hard during the two mini-camps but the weather and the limited practice sessions in sweats and helmets were a big difference from what we were able to do today.”

Brown missed the club’s two mini-camps while he completed his duties as an assistant coach for the Green Bay Packers and got his first real look at his new team on Wednesday. “We have a deep and talented squad. There will be spirited competition for playing time at each and every position. I told the guys at the end of practice that we just need to take steps forward every day. We have a month to get ready for Birmingham and if we make positive steps each day, we can accomplish the goals we have set for our team.”

The Maniax’ coaching staff had a chance to take its first look at nine new players who were selected in last Friday’s supplemental draft and two additional territorial picks – Marvin Thomas and David Brandon who both played college football at the University of Memphis. “We added some NFL veterans in the draft last week, including a couple of guys who have Super Bowl rings (Barry Wilburn with Washington in 1987 and Thomas with Denver in 1998),” continued Brown. “We have a very good mix of veterans and younger players and that should help make us a stronger team.”

The Maniax continue camp with two-a-day sessions scheduled for both Thursday and Friday and a single practice set for Saturday afternoon with the team’s first scrimmage on the agenda.
