Brown Likes What He Sees in Initial Scrimmage
Offense Gets Slight Edge in Final Evaluation

The Memphis Maniax held their first scrimmage in their four-day old training camp and Head Coach Kippy Brown was pretty pleased with what he saw.

“After the scrimmage, I was very happy, especially with our play on offense. But after I got a chance to review the video, I saw a number of mental mistakes that brought me back down to earth a little bit,” said Brown. “Still, I was very pleased with our overall play.”

Brown liked the way the offense moved the football. “The offense moved the ball pretty well, and at times it appeared that they did it with some semblance of ease. We made a few mental mistakes, and our footwork can definitely use some improvement, but both the passing and running games were productive.

“On defense, we played hard but our tackling was sloppy. We let a lot of potential tackles slip away. That may also be a credit to our running backs and receivers for running very hard,” continued Brown.

“There were a lot of positives out there today. The running backs ran hard and broke a lot of tackles. Other than one poor exchange between the center and quarterback, we had no turnovers. That is very unusual for a camp’s first scrimmage,” commented Brown. “We had minimal penalties and, as it has been all week, the enthusiasm was excellent.”

“Most coaches will tell you that the most improvement you see in a team usually comes between the first and second scrimmages, so I’m looking forward to seeing that in the next few days.”

Brown had special praise for a few individuals. “Rashaan Salaam and Brent Moss made some great plays and ran very hard today. They both stood out in the early part of the scrimmage. Fullbacks Roosevelt Potts and Jim Kitts did a good job of blocking and they helped Salaam and Moss break some big plays.”

There were some standouts on defense as well. “I thought (defensive end) Shante Carve played extremely well and had a sack on the first series that sparked the defense,” said Brown. “(Linebacker) Richard Hogans (from the University of Memphis) shows up on the tape all the time making big plays. (Linebacker) Paul Lacoste (Mississippi State) was everywhere. He was very active and made a lot of tackles. In the secondary, John Williams stood out at the corner and looked very impressive.”

The Maniax will work out just once Sunday afternoon after reviewing Saturday’s videotape Sunday morning. Two-a-days resume on Monday at Foothill High School in suburban Henderson.
