Maniax Run Though Light Sunday Workout
Team to Return to Two-a-Days on Monday

The Memphis Maniax ran through just one pad-less workout on Sunday, just 24 hours after the team’s first scrimmage in its first week of training camp.

Head Coach Kippy Brown ran the team through drills and focused on the installation of different parts of the team’s offense on Sunday, including the two-minute drill. The club also worked on goal-line situations and other offensive wrinkles. “We had a little bit of a letdown today after a really good effort in the scrimmage yesterday,” commented Brown. “We’ll get back to our regular routine on Monday and resume the hard work that we displayed last week.”

Last week’s hard work showed its dividends in Saturday’s scrimmage. One of the standouts at that scrimmage was running back Rashaan Salaam, the 1994 Heisman Trophy winner who is trying to put his pro football career back on track after injuries hindered him the last four seasons.

Salaam has been impressive in the first week of camp, and he feels good about what he has accomplished. “It felt real good to scrimmage yesterday,” said Salaam, who had not participated in a full-contact scrimmage or game since finishing the 1999 season with Green Bay. “The first few days I felt a little rusty but I ran well in the scrimmage and feel pretty good right now.”

“I worked real hard the last few months on my footwork,” continued Salaam, who gained over 1,000 yards in his rookie season with the Chicago Bears in 1995. “I want to be as light on my feet as possible so that I can be a faster and quicker running back.”

Salaam is just one of several backs who looked impressive in Saturday’s scrimmage. Brent Moss, who starred at Wisconsin as a collegian and led the Badgers to the 1994 Rose Bowl title, broke several tackles yesterday. Rafael Cooper from Louisville broke two long runs and showed good speed. Jay Graham, from Tennessee, played well on Saturday and Ketric Sanford (Univ. of Houston) has impressed the coaches in both mini-camps in addition to the club’s training camp.

“There is a lot of competition in the backfield and that will make us a more explosive team,” said Brown. “We have a lot of talent back there and it showed in Saturday’s scrimmage.”

The Maniax will practice twice on both Monday and Tuesday and then just one time Wednesday. Thursday’s schedule calls for the club’s first look at another team when the Maniax scrimmage the San Francisco Demons at Sam Boyd Stadium at 5 p.m. (PST).
