Chilly Weather And Rain Doesn’t Dampen Maniax’ Enthusiasm
Club Goes Through Two Spirited Workouts Monday at Training Camp

Head Coach Kippy Brown was very pleased to see his team bounce back from a lackluster workout on Sunday as the club headed into its second week of training camp at Foothill High School in Henderson, Nev. The Las Vegas weather cooled off Monday, with temperatures in the mid-40s and a steady rain fell during the afternoon practice.

“The enthusiasm was back today and the guys had two very good workouts,” said Brown who was disappointed with Sunday afternoon’s effort. “Our execution today was better than it has been since we opened camp. We just want to see some improvement each day and keep taking steps forward. Today was a very positive step.”

Brown was especially encouraged by the players’ efforts on special teams. “We have a lot of guys working hard to play on special teams. With only 38 active players on our roster on game days, our guys know that just about everyone will be expected to contribute on special teams. They are competing very hard for spots right now and that competition was very evident in today’s practice. The guys really got after it.”

With the 38-man roster, the XFL has mandated that teams carry just one kicker to handle both placements and punts. Memphis has two kickers vying for that role – former Tennessee standout Jeff Hall and former Virginia All-America punter Will Brice. Hall has focused on placements and field goals since the beginning of his college career, while Brice has done just the opposite, concentrating on punting. Both have played in the NFL with Hall kicking for the Rams for four games this season and Brice serving as the regular punter for the Rams in the first half of 1997 and for the Bengals in 11 games in ’99. “We knew that Jeff was an outstanding kicker and that Will was an accomplished punter,” said Brown, “but now we are asking them to work on the other halves of their specialty. Jeff hasn’t really worked on punting since he was in high school but he has done it very well this week. Will has a strong leg and is getting used to kicking again. We are fortunate to have two good kickers in camp and I feel very good about that position on our team.”

The Maniax will practice twice again on Tuesday and once on Wednesday morning. The team will get its first look at an opposing XFL outfit on Thursday when it scrimmages against the Las Vegas Outlaws at 5 p.m. at Sam Boyd Stadium.
