Maniax Hold Lively Scrimmage With Outlaws
Memphis Gets First Look at XFL Competition

The Memphis Maniax got their first look at XFL competition on Thursday when the club faced the Las Vegas Outlaws in a scrimmage on a muddy practice field outside of Sam Boyd Stadium.

The workout was moved up two-and-one-half hours in order to play it on a practice field where there were no lights. The field at Sam Boyd Stadium was too wet from rain over the last three days to allow the four Western Conference teams to play there as scheduled. San Francisco and Los Angeles scrimmaged each other just prior to the Maniax and the Outlaws taking the field.

No score or statistics were kept, but Memphis did manage to score one touchdown both offensively and defensively and the Maniax also connected on a field goal.

Kicker Jeff Hall got the scoring started with a 49-yard filed goal out of the mud on the Maniax’ first offensive series. Tailback Rafael Cooper later added a touchdown run and linebacker Cornell Menafee added a score on a 30-yard interception runback.

Head Coach Kippy Brown again was pleased with his team’s enthusiasm. “The guys had fun putting a knock on somebody other than their own teammates today,” said Brown. “I was very pleased with the effort, despite the slippery field conditions. We have a lot of work ahead of us but I am pleased that we continue to get better with each practice.”

Brown liked what he saw from a pair of running backs. “Rafael Cooper and Ketric Sanford each looked sharp today. Ketric is one of the guys who steps to the forefront when the game begins. I also thought that Craig Whelihan threw the ball best among the quarterbacks but I was pleased with all of their efforts.”

The Maniax will study the scrimmage tape on Friday morning and practice for the only time on Friday afternoon. The club will resume two-a-day-workouts on Saturday and Sunday.
