MANIAX ACQUIRE FORMER ARKANSAS STAR

March 6, 2001

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Maniax have made their first trade in franchise history, sending reserve quarterback Craig Whelihan to the Chicago Enforcers in exchange for offensive guard Isaac “Ike” Davis.

Whelihan was one of three veteran quarterbacks on the Maniax roster. He played in just one game, completing five of 12 passes for 46 yards with one interception in a relief role against Las Vegas on Feb. 11. He was the designated third quarterback in the season opener at Birmingham and in last Sunday’s game vs. Orlando.

Davis (6-3, 320), a five-year NFL veteran, is considered a powerful run blocker.

“In Ike Davis we are getting an experienced, physical, veteran player that will give us a little more muscle than we had in our offensive line,” said Maniax Head Coach Kippy Brown. “We needed to strengthen our offensive line and give us more depth as we enter the second half of our season.”

“We had collectively the best three quarterbacks in the league,” added Brown. “It was a luxury and put us in the position to make a deal like this one. This gives Craig an opportunity to go somewhere and have a chance to play now. He’s a good player and deserves that chance.”

Davis was selected in the second round of the 1994 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers after an outstanding career at the University of Arkansas. He played in 13 games as a rookie and started four. He also played in three postseason games for the Chargers in 1994, including the 1995 Super Bowl. He started 10 of 16 games in 1995 and five more for the Chargers in 1996. That 1996 season was shortened due to a knee injury. He split the 1997 season between San Diego and New Orleans, starting 12 games for the Chargers and three more for the Saints.

Davis was a third-team All-America and first-team All-SEC pick as both a junior and senior at Arkansas. He started at right guard for the Razorbacks and did not allow a sack or pressure in both his junior and senior seasons.

A native of Malvern, Ark., Davis was an All-America selection by Super Prep as a senior in 1989. He has established a scholarship fund at Malvern High School for two minority students each year for $1,000.
