1994 Heisman Trophy winner Rashaan
Shalaam broke loose for a 39-yard first quarter touchdown run that set the tone for
Memphis 22-20 win over the Thunderbolts Sunday.
A Legion Field crowd of 35,331 saw the Bolts come back from a 19-6 half time deficit, but
Salaam proved too slippery for the Bolts defense. Salaam, who also scored on a
9-yard run, rushed 27 times for 156 yards.
Memphis quarterback Marcus Crandell, briefly replaced by Jim Druckenmiller after taking a
hard hit, connected with Darryl Hobbs on a 49-yard scoring play that gave the Maniax a
13-0 lead. Crandell completed 11 of 19 passes for 173 yards to go with the touchdown and
an interception.
Damon Gourdine caught a touchdown pass from Casey Weldon shortly before the half to give
Birmingham its first points in team history. Former Auburn star James Bostic rumbled in
from three yards out early in the third quarter to further close the gap. But a 32-yard
field goal by Memphis Jeff Hall gave the Maniax a comfortable enough cushion to
secure the win.
Weldon threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Quincy Jackson to finish the scoring.
Linebacker James Willis led the Bolts defense with 12 tackles. Defensive end Charles
Preston contributed seven tackles including four behind the line of scrimmage.
