The photos, physical examinations and conditioning tests have
all been done. The mini-camps are over and the pads have been
issued. It's time to play XFL football in Birmingham.
The wake up call will come early for the Birmingham Thunderbolts
Wednesday morning. Breakfast is served at 6:30 a.m. EST and
an hour later Birmingham's entry in the XFL will head to the
Citrus Bowl complex for the first practice toward putting
together a team to face the Memphis Maniax in the Feb. 4 season
opener.
"After all the preparation and the hype, it's finally
here," head coach Gerry DiNardo said. "It's time
to start putting together a football team for Birmingham."
After reporting Monday, the Thunderbolts spent Tuesday taking
photographs and being examined by HealthSouth doctors before
finishing the day with conditioning tests Tuesday night at
the Citrus Bowl complex. Wednesday will be practice, two-a-day
style.
The Bolts will hit the field at 8:45 a.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday
for the first of three two-a-day workouts this week. Thursday
and Saturday will see Birmingham practice just once, with
two-a-days scheduled the rest of the week.
Birmingham is one of four XFL teams holding training camp
in Orlando, joining the New York/New Jersey Hitmen, the Orlando
Rage and the Chicago Enforcers. The four Western Conference
teams are training in Las Vegas.
Training camp breaks on Jan. 27.
