STAMFORD, CONN. The XFL today named Chicago Enforcers QB
Kevin McDougal as its Offensive Player of the Week and teammate
LB Jamie Baisley as its Defensive Player of the Week for week nine,
marking the second consecutive week in which Enforcers players have
swept the awards.
The tandem led Chicago to its third straight victory, a 23-18, last-minute
win over the New York/New Jersey Hitmen last Saturday night at Giants
Stadium. Trailing 18-16 late, McDougal returned from an injury to
throw what would turn out to be the game-winning score to William
Tate with 1:41 to play, a 19-yard strike which put Chicago up 23-18
after a LeShon Johnson PAT. The Hitmen would then drive all the
way down the field, but it was Baisley who preserved the victory
with an interception on the one-yard line as time ran out.
McDougal produced the heroics after returning from a neck sprain
suffered in the third quarter, which knocked him out of the game
until he returned for the games final drive. He finished the
game 13-24 for 193 yards and three TDs, also throwing two interceptions.
This marks the second time McDougal has earned XFL offensive honors,
after he also won the award in week five. Teammate RB John Avery
is the only other player to have captured Player of the Week honors
twice this season.
On top of his game-saving interception, Baisley led the Enforcers
defense with eight tackles, seven of them solo efforts, and two
of them for losses.
With the win, the Enforcers, who began the season at 0-4 and are
now 4-5, can complete their improbable turn-around by clinching
a playoff spot with a win Sunday over Chicago, or a loss by NY/NJ
in Birmingham Sunday afternoon. A Chicago loss and a Hitmen win
would give NY/NJ the second and final playoff spot in the East.
Runner-up on offense was Memphis QB Jim Druckenmiller, who threw
three TDs Sunday in a victory over Los Angeles. Runner-up on defense
was Birmingham CB Eric Sloan, who had three interceptions and returned
one 59 yards for a TD in a loss to Orlando on Saturday.
