56 And Counting
The Los Angeles Xtreme made its second cut of training camp this morning releasing six players to trim its roster down to 56 players. The Xtreme waived two former San Diego State Aztecs, offensive lineman Rick Austin and running back George Jones, as well as Darwin Brown (Texas Tech), Paris Johnson (Miami O) and Kerry Taylor (Nebraska).

Each of the eight XFL teams were required by the league to cut its roster from 62 to 56 players on Monday by 4:30 p.m. eastern. The Xtreme’s final and biggest cut will be this Friday, when the team will release 11 players to get down to its final roster count of 45. The Xtreme will carry 38 players on its active roster during the regular season, plus seven on the practice squad.

The Xtreme open its inaugural season Sunday, February 4 at Pacific Bell Park in San Francisco against the San Francisco Demons.

Austin, who played last season for Xtreme Head Coach Al Luginbill in NFL Europe, was competing for a spot on an offensive line that includes five-time CFL all-star Bruce Beaton and former NFL veterans Nate Miller, Jerry Crafts and Derrick Graham.

Jones, who holds the single-season rushing record at San Diego State, was competing for a job amongst a deep Xtreme running back corps that includes former Kansas City Chief,

Rashaan Shehee; former Atlanta Falcon, Ken Oxendine; and former University of Oregon star Saladin McCullough.

Xtreme Training Camp Schedule
This Friday (1/26/01) will be a long yet eventful day for Team Xtreme. On that day, the Xtreme will close training camp in Las Vegas, playing its final scrimmage of camp against the Memphis Maniax at Sam Boyd Stadium. The scrimmage starts at noon and is open to the media.

Shortly after the scrimmage, the Xtreme will break camp and head back to Los Angeles to prepare for its season opener set for Sunday, February 4 at Pacific Bell Park in San Francisco against the Demons.

Veteran Stadium at Long Beach City College will be the Xtreme’s practice facility for the 2001 season.
