Xtreme Focus On Giving Consistent Performance
Team addresses strengths and weaknesses following scrimmage with Outlaws
January 21, 2001

Less than a week away from breaking camp to prepare for its season opener, the Los Angeles Xtreme worked out some kinks in the offense while also managing to thrive in the passing game and on the defense line during a scrimmage as part of a combined practice with the Las Vegas Outlaws at Sam Boyd Stadium.

“In my opinion we need to play the way we did in the first half of this practice,” said Al Luginbill, Xtreme Head Coach.

“In the first half we showed consistent effort offensively, defensively and in the kicking game. The second half we displayed too much inconsistency. We have two weeks to correct that. I will tell you this. We will not win against San Francisco in week one if we play like we did today.”

The Xtreme open its inaugural season Sunday, February 4, 2001 against the San Francisco Demons at Pacific Bell Park in San Francisco.

The Xtreme defensive front registered four sacks in the scrimmage, including two coming back to back by defensive tackle Curtis Eason and defensive end Jamal Duff.

Offensively, the Xtreme moved the ball effectively, but were hampered by four fumbles lost in the first half, two of those turnovers coming inside the Outlaws twenty yard-line.

Once the Xtreme got over the turnover bug, the team was able to finish off some impressive drives. The Xtreme scored for the first time on an 11-yard touchdown run by Ken Oxendine. Later in the first half, Tommy Maddox hooked up on a screen with Rashaan Shehee who scored from from 10 yards out.

In the second half, with Scott Milanovich taking the snaps, the Xtreme scored when the former Maryland star connected with Latario Rachal who went 50 yards for the score.

The Xtreme’s final touchdown of the afternoon came on a one-yard touchdown plunge by Saladin McCullough.

As for the turnovers, several came from the exchange between center and quarterback. Of the the miscues, none of the Xtreme QB’s are too concerned.

“That’s why you have theses practices,” said Maddox. “These things tend to work itself out. We’ll focus on it this week in practice and go from there.”

The Xtreme used three different centers throughout the afternoon, Jonathan Himebauch, Chris Brymer and Ron Lewis.

“It’s tough to go through that many centers,” said Milanovich. “We’ll take care of this during the rest of camp. It’s not a big deal.”

The Xtreme return to Los Angeles following its final scrimmage of training camp next Friday (January 26) against the Memphis Maniax at Sam Boyd Stadium. The scrimmage will open to the public and the media.

On Monday (January 22), the Xtreme will trim its 62-man roster down to 56 players. The final roster will consist of 45 players, 38 active with 7 on the practice squad.

Rosters must be finalized for all eight XFL teams by Sunday, January 28.

The Xtreme will begin practice locally at Long Beach City College on that same Sunday. Practices are open to the media.
