Xtreme open practice as favorites to win XFL title
Team trims roster with opener just seven days away
January 29, 2001

The Los Angeles Xtreme of the XFL opened practice this morning at Long Beach City College with the expectations-- at least in Nevada-- of being the league favorites to win the first XFL Championship on April 21, 2001.

According to Vegasinsider.com, sports books in Nevada have the Xtreme listed as 5-2 favorites to be the first of the eight XFL teams to be crowned league champion. The Orlando Rage were slotted second behind the Xtreme at 4:1. The Memphis Maniax and the Las Vegas Outlaws were selected at 5:1.

The Xtreme open its inaugural season Sunday, February 4, 2001 against the San Francisco Demons at Pacific Bell Park. The Demons were ranked sixth by the sports books with 7:1 odds.

Final Cuts
Before holding its first practice as a complete squad this morning, the Xtreme trimmed its roster from 56 to the required 45 players. The Xtreme will announce its active 38-man roster this Friday, two days before its season opener against the Demons.

As part of its roster, the Xtreme will carry seven players on its practice squad. The Xtreme will also designate two players on the “practice/injured” list. Damon Dunn (WR) and Donnell Day (CB) were placed on the practice/injured list by the Xtreme this morning.

XTREME OPEN PRACTICE AT LBCC
Following a month of training camp in Las Vegas, the Xtreme were anxious to return to Long Beach and begin practice this morning. Wide receiver Jeremaine Copeland was among those happy to be at LBCC.

“Vegas is a two day trip, man,” said Copeland. “I’m just happy to get out of there. I’m ready to play for real. You know me, I’ve been ready to play since day one.”

Quarterback Tommy Maddox, who enjoyed an excellent training camp while battling with Scott Milanovich for playing time, is also ready to do this for real.

“Everybody is excited to get here to Long Beach,” said Maddox. “We’ve been working hard for a month now and it’s great to finally get close to playing a game for real.”

Maddox and company will not only play for real they will play for cool, hard cash. In the XFL each player on the 38-man active roster will earn a $2500 bonus with each victory.

Xtreme Head Coach Al Luginbill is all for the “get paid to play, get paid more if you win” system.

“This is the way our society should be,” said Coach Luginbill. “When you produce the way you are expected to, you get rewarded as an organization. No one is guaranteed anything. Everyone makes a base salary ($4500/game) but after that you have to earn it.”

The Xtreme will try to earn its first bonus and its first victory this Sunday in San Francisco against the Demons.

PRACTICE SCHEDULE
The Xtreme will take Tuesday, January 30 off from practice. Players will use the day to move into apartments in the Long Beach and Los Angeles area.

Coach Luginbill will use to Tuesday to address the media at his weekly coach’s lunch at Trani’s in Long Beach. The lunch will begin at noon.

The Xtreme will practice 9:30-11:15 a.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week. (Friday’s practice may run short. Please call to confirm time.) Players are available to the media upon request following practice. The team will travel to San Francisco on Saturday afternoon.
