Los Angeles Xtreme close training camp against Maniax
Maddox and Shehee take day off as team looks ahead to season opener
January 29, 2001

The Los Angeles Xtreme wrapped up its first training camp in team history scoring a touchdown and two field goals in a scrimmage against the Memphis Maniax at Foothill High School in Henderson, Nevada.

Tommy Maddox (no. 8, pictured left with Scott Milanovich), who started the Xtreme’s previous two scrimmages, took the afternoon off. Running back Rashaan Shehee also sat out, resting a sore elbow.

With Maddox on the sideline, the Xtreme were lead by quarterback Scott Milanovich. The first pick in the first XFL draft, Milanovich put the Xtreme on the board early in the second quarter connecting on a 26-yard scoring strike to tight end Tremayne Allen.

Milanovich also led the Xtreme to two field goals before giving way to rookie quarterback Leon Murray of East Tennessee St. in the second half.

“It’s tough to get going in the final scrimmage,” said Milanovich. “Everyone is thinking about getting settled in back in LA. But we did some good things, moving the ball nicely at times. Considering the situation it was a good last day.”

Both field goals, one from 32-yards, the other from 21-yards out were kicked by Jose Cortez.

The Xtreme defense continued to be stingy as it has throughout training camp. The Xtreme did not allow a rushing touchdown in each of its three scrimmages.

“We are very comfortable with our defense,” Xtreme Head Coach Al Luginbill. “We had an excellent work ethic all through camp. Hopefully that will lead us to where we want to go.”

Xtreme defensive end Curtis Eason also understands both the offense and defense must play well for the Xtreme to win its season opener in San Francisco next Sunday.

“Offense sells tickets, defense wins championships,” said Eason

Unfortunately the Xtreme did not escape Friday’s scrimmage without a casualty. With less than two minutes to go in the scrimmage, Xtreme offensive lineman Ron Lewis broke his right leg trying while trying to make a block at the line of scrimmage. Lewis was taken from the field in an ambulance to a local hospital in Las Vegas.

“This is tough for all of us, but especially for Ron,” said Coach Luginbill. “But I know Ron Lewis well, and he will survive this.”

Lewis played two seasons under Luginbill with the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe.

With a month of training camp under its belt, the Xtreme returned to Los Angeles Friday evening. The team will begin practicing this at Long Beach City College this Monday to prepare for its season opener next Sunday at San Francisco.

Also on Monday, The Xtreme, along with each of the seven other XFL teams, will announce its final cuts and final rosters for next weekend’s historic series of season openers.

The Xtreme must trim its roster from 56 to 45 players. 38 players will be held on the active roster, while seven will be placed on the practice squad.

Xtreme wide receiver Jeremaine Copeland knows the value of practice but he apparently wanted the season to open a long time ago.

“You know me, I’ve been ready since day one,” said Copeland. I’m ready to go spoil opening day for all those folks in San Francisco. You only get paid by winning. Let’s go, man.”

Did someone say No. Cal- So. Cal rivalry?
