LOS ANGELES QB TOMMY MADDOX, LAS VEGAS DT CARL SIMPSON EARN XFL PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS, EYE WESTERN DIVISION FIRST-PLACE SHOWDOWN SATURDAY

MADDOX LEADS XTREME TO BLOWOUT OF PREVIOUSLY-UNDEFEATED RAGE; SIMPSON AND OUTLAWS’ “DEALERS OF DOOM” TOO MUCH FOR BOLTS

March 20, 2001

STAMFORD, CONN. (Tuesday, March 20, 2001) – The XFL today named Los Angeles Xtreme QB Tommy Maddox as its Offensive Player of the Week and Las Vegas Outlaws DT Carl Simpson as its Defensive Player of the Week for week seven. The award winners will meet head-to-head when the Xtreme (5-2) and the Outlaws (4-3) battle for first place in the Western Division this Saturday at the Los Angeles Coliseum (8:00 p.m. ET on NBC).

Maddox, the league leader in touchdown passes (13) and passing yards (1,588) improved upon those numbers last Sunday in the Xtreme's 31-6 thrashing of the previously- undefeated Orlando Rage. Maddox completed 19 of 25 passes for 199 yards, tossing for two touchdowns and running for another, all in just over three quarters of work. He has not thrown an interception in his last three games, covering 98 attempts, and has now thrown a touchdown pass in six of the Xtreme's seven games this season.

"It’s an honor to be chosen as a player of the week. That said and done, now its time to focus on this week,” said Maddox. “We are going against a divisional foe that has a great defense and an aggressive defensive line. A month ago we were able to go to their place and get a big win, I'm sure they are looking to do the same to us.”

Simpson registered two sacks and five tackles in the Outlaws’ 34-12 win over the Birmingham Bolts last Saturday, with four of the five tackles for losses. Simpson and the “Dealers of Doom,” the name given to the Outlaws’ defense via a fan contest, held the Bolts to just two field goals and 113 net yards on the day, and even chipped in six points on a 99-yard fumble return by S Jamel Williams. Birmingham’s lone TD was also by its defense.

"All the credit has to go my teammates on the defensive line, without them, there’s no way we’d have this success,” said Simpson. “The strength of this defense is depth, you can go one hundred percent on every play and know your teammate can step up on the next one."

Runner-up for offensive honors was Chicago RB John Avery, who had 110 yards rushing to lead the Enforcers to a 25-19 win over San Francisco. Runner-up for defensive honors was Xtreme LB Juan Long, instrumental in the victory over Orlando.
