Best of the XFL West to Clash this Saturday at the Los Angeles Coliseum
First Place LAX Can Clinch First Trip to Play-offs with Win over Outlaws This Saturday

March 23, 2001

Let’s Review: Saturday March 24, 2001 at the Los Angeles Coliseum, the first place Los Angeles Xtreme (5-2) host the second place Las Vegas Outlaws (4-3) in Week Eight of XFL play. Kickoff is 5:07 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on NBC and locally on KNBC. The game will be carried on radio on 97.1 KLSX in Los Angeles.

Playoff Implications: The Xtreme (5-2), winners of four of their last five games, lead the second place Outlaws (4-3) by one game in the XFL’s Western Division with three games to play. With a victory the Xtreme clinch one of the two available playoff spots out of the West.

Western Division Title: The Xtreme cannot clinch the Western Division Title until Week Nine at the earliest. Either Memphis (3-4) or San Francisco (3-4) could catch the Xtreme to win the West with a 6-4 record at season’s end. Each team has beaten the Xtreme this season. The Xtreme face the Maniax next Sunday in Memphis and the Demons the final Saturday of the regular season.

Offensive Player of the Week Leads Xtreme: The Xtreme are lead quarterback Tommy Maddox, selected Tuesday as the XFL’s Offensive Player of the Week. Maddox leads the XFL in touchdown passes (13) and yards (1,588) heading into Week Nine. Maddox, who also leads the league in interceptions with six, has not been picked off in his last three games. Maddox is the second Xtreme player to win the Player of the Week honor; wide receiver Jeremaine Copeland took the prize in Week Two.

Maddox Not Alone: Along with Maddox, members of the Los Angeles Xtreme lead in several offensive categories including: touchdowns (Darnell McDonald-7); touchdown receptions (McDonald-7); receptions (Jeremaine Copeland-45); field goal made (Cortez-14); field goal accuracy (Cortez-77%).

First Start for Sali: Although he has carried most of the rushing load the past two weeks, Saturday will be Saladin McCullough’s first official start of the season. The former prep star out of John Muir High School in Pasasdena is the only Xtreme running back to rush over 100 yards (124 yards vs. the Bolts in Week 7) this season.

Special Teams Xtremely Special: The Xtreme have the top field goal kicker, punter and punt returner in the XFL. Kicker Jose Cortez leads the XFL with 14 field goals, punter Noel Prefontaine is the top punter with a 44.3 average, and Damon Gibson leads the league in punt return average at 17.9 yards per return.

Head Outlaw May Be Gun Shy: Look for Vegas quarterback Ryan Clement to keep an eye on the Xtreme’s very active-and lately downright brutal-linebackers. The Xtreme LB’s have taken out the last two starting quarterbacks it has faced. Wednesday, the Orlando Rage announced quarterback Jeff Brohm will miss the rest of the season to undergo surgery for a separated shoulder (right) he suffered when sacked by the Xtreme’s Juan Long last Sunday. Week Eight in Birmingham, the Bolts’ lost QB Casey Weldon for the season with a rotator cuff injury after being sacked by the Xtreme’s Shawn Stuckey. .

Former Outlaw Thrilled To Get Xtreme: A month ago, frustrated at spending the first three weeks of the XFL season on the Outlaws practice squad, safety Ron Carpenter had his clothes packed and ready to go back home to Cincinnati. The next day however, Carpenter got the call telling the former Amsterdam Admiral he had been traded to the Los Angeles Xtreme (and his former NFLE coach Al Luginbill) for an eight round draft choice. The move has proved to be an excellent one for Team X. Carpenter has lead the Xtreme in special team tackles the last three weeks with 11 and will start against his former team this Saturday at free safety.

Shoeless in His Free Time: A poll on the Xtreme’s website asked “Do you think Jose Cortez walks around town with one shoe?” According to Xtreme fans, he does. As of Friday morning 73% said yes, Cortez strolls around the streets of Van Nuys with one shoe on. 27% said Cortez takes the more traditional-two shoe approach to being a pedestrian. Just under 10,000 Xtreme fans took place in this week’s poll on XFL.Com.

Spreading the Wealth: Since Week One the players on the Xtreme’s 38-man roster have been donating $100 per player to practice squad each week. The pot, worth $3800, means an extra $540 dollars for each of the seven players on the practice squad. Players on the active 38-man roster are guaranteed $4500 per week, while players on the practice squad make $1500 per week. Only players on the active roster earn he $2500 bonus for each Xtreme victory.
