Notes from the November Mini Camp
November 17 - Part 1

There’s Trojan Trouble A’Bruin
Mini Camp X at the Coliseum has been like old times for former USC teammates Chris Brymer and Jonathan Himebauch.

Friday during a break at day four of camp, the former Trojans took time to double team an apparently defenseless former Bruin, Xtreme quarterback Tommy Maddox. Maddox survived the ambush and actually enjoys having a couple of Trojans on his side this time of year.

"It kinds of adds to it a little bit," said Maddox. "I think its fun. Even though it is a heated rivalry I get along with everybody on the field. Actually, its cool just to be working out in this stadium."

Known in So. Cal as "The Rivalry," the USC-UCLA game is this Saturday at the Rose Bowl. Game time is 3:30 p.m. pacific, right in the middle of the Xtreme's afternoon practice but the team should be off in time to catch the second half. As for the Trojans on the Xtreme, Brymer thinks its kind of convenient to have Maddox so close.

"Well, its nice come Sunday because we'll be able to rub it in," said the guard from Apple Valley, CA. Himebuach remains a bit more neutral over having a Bruin on his side now. "I don't know the guy too well yet so I'm not going to hold anything against him," said Himebauch. "We'll see how it goes. I'm definitely looking forward to the game on Saturday."

John McKay, the Xtreme's General Manger, is a little less diplomatic. "We drafted Tommy despite the fact he lacks a formal education," joked McKay. "You do what you can."

Maddox was 1-1 against USC in his two seasons at UCLA. In 1990, Maddox set a then school record passing for 409 yards along with four touchdowns but lost "The Shootout" 45-42 to USC and its QB Todd Marinovich in what many call the best game in the rivalry's 70 year history.

If you want to see Maddox in action before the Xtreme open February 4, 2001 in San Francisco, catch the 1990 USC-UCLA game on ESPN Classic Friday November 17 at 8pm pacific. But if you want to see Maddox up close and in action in 2001 you must get your Xtreme season tickets now right here on Los Angeles Xtreme.com. Good seats are still available but are going fast.

Up and Kicking

Team Xtreme spent the latter part of Friday's morning session on the kicking game. Kickers Jose Cortez and Brian Moorman went head to head in a field goal kick off as they battle for the lone kicking job. Both are also vying for the punting duties. Cortez, who played high school soccer and football in Van Nuys, was working in Oregon as a roofer when the Xtreme gave him a call.

"When I got the call from (Special Teams) Coach (Chris) Allen he told me I was drafted and coming back to L.A. Trouble is at the time there was a lot of noise going on because we were tearing up the roof. So Coach Allen says, 'What in the world are you doing?' When I explained to him I was a roofer, he told me just don't fall of the roof ."

The Xtreme are familiar with Cortez. The former New York Giant handled the kicking duties for Coach Allen and Xtreme Head Coach Al Luginbill last Spring for Amsterdam in NFL Europe. Both kickers are also vying for a spot as the team's punter, but in a pinch the Xtreme could turn to quarterback Scott Malinovich. The former Terrapin ranks second on Maryland's all-time list in punting average at 41.7 yards per kick.
