Xtreme offense looks real strong
This could be the start of something wonderful.

Despite the cold and muddy conditions, the Los Angeles Xtreme enjoyed its first full contact scrimmage, scoring four touchdown and a field goal Thursday at Sam Boyd Stadium.

A steady rain that gave way to a cold, steady wind did not prevent Xtreme quarterback Tommy Maddox from throwing for three touchdowns or the Xtreme’s Larry Ryans from returning a punt 75 yards for a score.

Although pleased with the effort, Xtreme Head Coach Al Luginbill knows there is still plenty of work to be done before the Xtreme open its season against the Demons in San Francisco February 4, 2001.

“I reminded the players after the scrimmage, no one made a dime today;” said Coach Luginbill. “And no one will remember this effort come February 4, which is the game we’ve been preparing for since we started this organization.”

The Xtreme offense scored the first three times it touched the ball. Quarterback Tommy Maddox led Team X 73 yards to its first score, finished off by a 10 yard pass from Maddox to former Cleveland Brown receiver, Damon Gibson.

With the catch, Gibson, who also scored the first touchdown in a preseason game at the Browns’ new stadium in Cleveland, scored the first touchdown against an opponent in Xtreme history. Gibson is one of nine receivers competing for spots on the Xtreme’s extremely deep receiving corps.

“I don’t worry about stuff like that,” said Gibson. “Hey, I’ve been on several NFL teams and each one of these receivers could compete with every receiver on those teams. I’m just out here to make plays and let the chips fall as they may.”

Following Gibson’s touchdown, Rashaan Shehee busted in from three yards out for the extra point. In the XFL, a team must run or pass to earn the extra point. Finally, that point means something.

On the Xtreme’s next possession, Maddox led Los Angeles downfield, before hooking up with Kerry Taylor from 12 yards out for the second score of the day.

“We ran a little naked bootleg” said Maddox. “He came all the way across the field and found the hole. They had the other two options covered, so it was nice to see him come across the field. We haven’t completed that play in practice yet, so it was good to work it out against someone else.”

Maddox, a former first round draft choice in the NFL, also singled out the offensive line for an excellent job on pass protection. The Xtreme did not yield a sack all afternoon.

On the PAT, former Pac 10 rushing leader, Saladin McCullough, broke into the end zone for another point for the Xtreme
