67 AND COUNTING
It was a case of “good news, bad news” off the transaction wire this afternoon for the Xtreme. The bad news was the decision Wednesday morning by NFL veteran linebacker Mike Croel to retire and leave the Xtreme training camp. Several minor injuries have slowed down the former NFL first round draft choice the past two years.

“Mike was not playing to the level he knows how to play,” said Al Luginbill, Xtreme Head Coach. “It’s an unfortunate situation for both sides. Mike has been nothing but a positive influence in camp. He has been a pleasure to work with.”

Croel, who lives in Los Angeles, spent seven seasons in the NFL with the Broncos, Ravens and Seahawks. The former Nebraska star registered 24 sacks and two interceptions in 102 games for his NFL career.

Balancing the sober news about Croel’s retirement, was the acquisition defensive end, Dave Richie. Richie has played four seasons(1997-2000) in the NFL, most recently with the Green Bay Packers during Week 15 of the 2000 campaign.

“I am really excited about joining the Xtreme,” said Richie. “I have wanted to play for the XFL since the minute I heard about it.”

Richie will not be completely among strangers when he joins in Las Vegas Wednesday evening. Richie played at the University of Washington alongside Xtreme running back Rashaan Shehee. He was also the roommate of Xtreme linebacker Steve Russ while both were in training camp with the Broncos in 1997 and 1998.

Richie will be able to practice on Friday after undergoing a physical Thursday afternoon. Richie’s NFL career includes stints with the Packers, 49ers, and Broncos.

Also no stranger to the L.A. Colisuem, Richie was the anchor on the Washington Huskies defense that held USC to minus 18 yards rushing in the Huskies 24-10 victory over the Trojans in 1996.

Wide receiver Chris Penn and defensive tackle Jeff Cummins have each decided to leave the Xtreme’s training camp. If either player decides to return to the XFL, the Xtreme would retain the rights to both Penn and Cummins.

Penn, who played six seasons (1994-1999) in the NFL with the Chargers, Bears and Chiefs was competing for a job amongst an extremely deep receiving corps which includes Darnell McDonald, Damon Gibson, Latario Rachal, Jeremaine Copeland, Damon Dunn, Larry Ryans, Jason Shelley, LC Stevens and Todd Doxzon.

Cummins has played the past six seasons (1995-2000) in the Canadian Football League, the last two years as a starter for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The Xtreme’s roster currently sits at 67 players.

The Xtreme will make its first cut, down to 63 players on Sunday, January 14, 2001.
