News and Notes from Xtreme Training Camp (part 2)

GRASP, SCHMASP The XFL will not employ the quarterback “inside the grasp” rule, in hopes of opening the game up a bit by not killing plays in which in QB has the moxy to complete a big pass even while in the grasp of a burly defensive lineman.

Xtreme quarterback Tommy Maddox (pictured left) disputes the idea that not having the grasp rule will make quarterbacks more at risk to injury than in the NFL, which has the rule.

“Sure, in the NFL the defense gets penalized 15 yards for not obeying in the grasp, but as a QB, you still take the hit,” says Maddox.

“If a guy hits you late or after the whistle and gets penalized for it, it doesn’t make the punishment on my body any less. 15 yards is 15 yards, but having you’re jock sent flying into the third row still hurts whether the big fella gets penalized for it or not.”

Maddox, who played seven seasons in the NFL, is currently vying for playing time at quarterback with former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Scott Milanovich.

GEARING UP BY GEARING DOWN
With a scrimmage planned for Thursday at noon against the San Francisco Demons, the Xtreme took it easy on Day Eight of Training Camp at Sam Boyd Stadium… Team X took a day off from full contact for the first time in camp, taking the opportunity to run through several different sets on offense, defense and special teams. Rather than its normal two-a-day practice sessions, the Xtreme wrapped things up at 9:30 a.m. allowing players extra time for rehab and weight lifting.

As for Thursday’s scrimmage, three inches of rain are expected to dump on the greater Las Vegas area, potentially moving the contest to the Demons practice facility at Cimarron Memorial High School. The scrimmage is currently scheduled to take place at noon at the Xtreme’s training camp facility at Sam Boyd Stadium. A decision as to the actual scrimmage site will be made Thursday morning.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY
Xtreme Head Coach Al Luginbill looks at tomorrow's scrimmage as an excellent opportunity to give each player enough reps to prove what they can do for the team.

“We mandated from day one that every player would have a chance to make this team.” said Coach Luginbill. “Thursday is a great chance for us to give a thorough evaluation of our team’s individual talent.”

Following those evaluations, Coach Luginbill expects to release the team’s first depth chart of the camp, possibly on Monday. All Xtreme depth charts to this point have been done in alphabetical order.

DOWN AND DIRTY
On Tuesday, the Xtreme worked on its goal line package for the first time in camp. Conditions were a bit muddy on the practice field outside Sam Boyd Stadium, thanks to an uncommon desert rainfall of about one inch that fell in Las Vegas early Tuesday morning.

As for which side of the line dominated the ball, Xtreme defensive lineman Chad Pegues says, let it rain.

“I think the mud gives the defensive line an advantage, especially in a goal line situation, “said Pegues. “Most offensive have trouble getting their footing in that situation. Being more athletic than those guys, the d-line tends to get better position. I like it.”

The offense might disagree with that assessment, but that’s Chad’s story and he’s sticking to it. Pegues is competing with Ramondo Stallings, Eric Johnson, Matt Keneley, Bruce Walker, Donald Broomfield, Curtis Eason and John Kirksey for spots on the Xtreme roster at defensive tackle.
