Enter your search terms Submit search form   Web www.all-xfl.com Press Release 1 Demons will play opening season at Pacific Bell Park Team to be officially named San Francisco Demons San Francisco, CA, September 15, 2000 The Bay Area’s entry in the XFL, the newest league on the professional football landscape, will take up residence in San Francisco and officially be called the San Francisco Demons, the league’s president Basil V. DeVito, Jr., announced today. The Demons, one of eight teams in the newly formed league co-owned by World Wrestling Federation Entertainment (NMSL: WWFE) and NBC, also disclosed an agreement to hold their home games at Pacific Bell Park, the newest stadium in the Bay Area. “This move goes hand-in-hand with our strong commitment to our fans to provide a quality football product in the best venues in America,” DeVito said. “Pacific Bell Park takes a backseat to no one in that category.” “This is an exciting day for us,” Demons Vice President-General Manager Mike Preacher said. “The XFL will get off to a rousing start in the Bay Area by playing its home games in the finest sports facility anywhere.” Pat Gallagher, president of Giants Enterprises, which develops non-baseball opportunities to utilize Pacific Bell Park year-round, welcomed the new venture in San Francisco. “We want to expose this jewel of a park to as many people as we can,” Gallagher said. “And we think this will be an absolutely terrific venue for football.” Pacific Bell Park’s configuration for the XFL will accommodate 40,000 spectators. Having the Demons play at this facility will allow their fans to enjoy the first-rate amenities of the park. Originally, the Demons were scheduled to play at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, the 28,000-seat home of San Jose State University athletics. “We always have considered ourselves a team for the entire Bay Area,” Preacher added. “San Jose is an important market for the Demons as it should be for all Bay Area teams,” Preacher said. “We will promote our product to the residents of the South Bay with no less fervor than we would have had we been playing at Spartan Stadium. The people and city of San Jose have been first-class all the way. We know they will continue to support the Demons.” Preacher said officials of the XFL and the Demons were in the process of negotiating arrangements to use Spartan Stadium when the potential availability of Pacific Bell Park surfaced and then came to fruition. The XFL teams include the Los Angeles Xtreme, Chicago Enforcers, New York/New Jersey Hitmen, Orlando Rage, Memphis Maniax, Las Vegas Outlaws and the Birmingham Thunderbolts in addition to the San Francisco Demons. The XFL will kick off the 10-game season on February 3, 2001. Games will be telecast on NBC on Saturday nights and UPN and a cable network on Sundays. A four-team playoff will air on NBC and culminate with an XFL championship game on April 21, 2001.
