XFL DEMONS REMAIN SHORT OF FULL STRENGTH ON DEFENSE
VET CORNERBACK HARPER OUT WITH BAD BACK DEFENSIVE END ENGLAND WILL RETURN TO SAN FRANCISCO LINEUP, WRIGHT TO START AT STRONG SAFETY AGAINST MEMPHIS SATURDAY AT 5:00 P.M.

March 23, 2001

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (March 23, 2001) - Veteran cornerback Dwayne Harper will miss his first game for the San Francisco Demons Saturday night when they face the Memphis Maniax in the home finale at Pacific Bell Park at 5:00 p.m.

Harper complained of a stiff back after the four-hour flight back from Chicago Monday and was unable to practice the entire week when the condition didn't improve markedly throughout the week. He was one of seven players placed on the practice roster for the XFL Western Division elimination game with Memphis.

Coach Jim Skipper said Wendell Davis would start at left cornerback and Kevin Kaesviharn would move over the right corner for Saturday night's contest. Former San Jose Sabercat Lee Cole was activated to take Harper's place on the roster.

That isn't the only change in starters in the secondary the Demons will make for Memphis. Veteran Toby Wright, who played for the first time last week at Chicago after arriving in a trade with Las Vegas, will start at strong safety in place of Pete Destefano, who played for the first time last week after sitting out two games with the effects of a concussion.

Joining Harper on the inactive list this week with injuries are tailbacks Juan Johnson (knee) and Terry Battle (neck), and defensive end Jomo Cousins, who suffered a knee injury at Chicago. Destefano, emergency quarterback Oteman Sampson and cornerback Marvin Coleman, who joined the team Thursday from Calgary of the CFL and has not yet practiced with the Demons, are the other members of this week's practice squad.

San Francisco and Memphis are both 3-4 in the Western Division and the loser will likely be eliminated from playoff consideration. A crowd approaching 35,000 is expected for the the Demons' fifth home contest. San Francisco is leading the XFL in attendance with an average of 34,979 spectators after four home dates.

Skipper said San Francisco's skill position starters would remain the same this week, heading by quarterback Mike Pawlawski. Kelvin Anderson will start for the second straight week at tailback and Brian Roberson and Travis Moore will be the starters at receiver.

The Demons won the first meeting, 13-6, in Memphis, but quarterback Jim Druckenmiller played only in the fourth quarter of that game in relief of Marcus Crandell. He threw two interceptions that night, but has since been the league's most productive passer with a 399-yard game against Chicago.
