XFL’S WEST DIVISION LEADING OUTLAWS VISIT HISTORIC SOLDIER FIELD

Friday, March 02, 2001

STAMFORD, CONN. – The XFL West Division leading Las Vegas Outlaws (3-1), coming off a 16-9 victory in San Francisco’s “Hell Hole,” a.k.a. Pacific Bell Park, travel to historic Soldier Field Sunday to take on the hometown Chicago Enforcers in an interdivisional game to be televised live on TNN: The National Network at 4 p.m. ET.

Calling the Outlaws-Enforcers telecast for TNN will be analyst Bob Golic and play-by-play man Craig Minervini. Sideline reporting will be handled by Lee Reherman and Kip Lewis.

Featuring the league’s stingiest defense – Las Vegas has yielded a miniscule 24 points and only one touchdown in their first four games and they sport a league leading +11 takeaway/giveaway ratio – the Outlaws can’t afford to slip up against an Enforcers (0-4) team looking to post its first win. After all, lurking behind the Outlaws in the West are three times tied at 2-2, while next up is a visit to Orlando for a meeting with the East leading Rage, who just happen to be the XFL’s only unbeaten (4-0) team. Some have already begun calling that encounter “The Big Game in the Middle.”

Pacing the Outlaws’ defensive are Kelvin Kinney (league-leading six sacks) and Brandon Sanders (tied for the league lead with three INTs). On offense, Rod “He Hate Me” Smart is coming off his best game of the season, an 88-yard, TD run performance at San Francisco. Smart is sixth among league rushers.

Playing without injured star John Avery the Enforcers were shutout 13-0 last Saturday by the New York/New Jersey Hitmen in miserable playing conditions. Trying to compensate for the loss of Avery, who is hoping to return for Sunday’s game, the Enforcers turned to running back LeShon Johnson and QB Tim Lester. Unfortunately they were hampered greatly by a driving rain that turned Soldier Field sloppy and the XFL ball slippery. Anticipated good weather, along with the hoped for return of Avery, who has rushed for 313 yards in only three games, should play to the Enforcers’ advantage. At least they hope so.
