Outlaws Practice Notes
January 25, 2001

No pads today; the Outlaws spent nearly two hours running through plays in preparation for their scrimmage tomorrow against the San Francisco Demons.  Ryan Clement, Mike Buck, and Mike Cawley took snaps and looked comfortable in the pocket.  Rod Smart, Ben Snell, and Chris Chukwuma took their turns in the backfield.  The offensive line seemed to do a decent job of opening holes for the run up the middle, but were hit and miss when pulling to the outside.  Werner Hippler and JJ Huggins got in plenty of time at tight end, and Hippler made some pretty impressive catches, including one off of the defender's fingertips in the endzone.  Brett Bech made some impressive receptions as well, and he has really shone today.  The receivers were consistent as always.

The Ultimate Store for the Ultimate Fan!Defense is looking strong, and several players continue to improve.  Antonio Dingle and Angel Rubio have shown a good ability to stuff the run up the middle, as well as exhibit good pursuit to the outside.   Kelvin Kinney has good speed and is usually able to get around the offensive tackles.  The linebackers are solid, with Toran James and Tony Ortiz leading the way.   Mike Crawford has been putting in more time, and seems to be recovering pretty well from an earlier injury.  The secondary covers the receivers well, and both Paul Bradford and Kory Blackwell show a good ability to close on the ball once it is in the air.

Lots of special teams practice today, with Paul McCallum making consistent field goals.  Special attention was given to onside kicks, and one kick rocketed right into Ryan Clement's chest with a resounding Boom!

Mark Nori (IR) was on the sidelines with a knee brace; he said that it seemed to be feeling better lately, and hopes to rejoin the team soon.

Antonio Dingle still insists that he can and will do a backflip when he scores a touchdown (Las Vegas Review-Journal article).

Kory Blackwell had a great shot at an interception, but it bounced off his hands.

Kurt Gouviea has been dogged by hamstring problems over the past few weeks, and is out of town with his family.  He is expected back before the start of the season.

Scott Criner (receivers coach) was not in practice today; his wife was due to give birth to their baby today. Congratulations!
