Light walk-throughs were conducted by each group
on the team. Most of the day was spent reviewing tapes of
previous practices and also of the LA Xtreme's games. The
Outlaws are taking the Xtreme very serious, and have been putting
in long hours this week looking for any kind of strategy advantage.
Mike
Cawley is the new leader of the Outlaws at QB, and Jim Ballard will
be his backup. Both practiced very hard all week, and the
decision was not an easy one. This news should serve as good
for the Outlaws, as Cawley showed that he can step up as the starting
QB; Saturday will tell whether or not he can carry it on to the
game field. Former UNLV QB Jon Denton came by after practices
Wednesday and Thursday, along with two other prospective QB candidates.
Denton hopes to be able to sign as the third-string QB for the Outlaws
and soon; however, his exact performance was difficult to judge
as he only went through a very light routine in street clothes.
The other two threw very few passes and spent most of their time
helping Denton. Denton says that he has been training to stay
in shape, and hopes to be participating in Outlaws' practices as
early as next week.
The Outlaws are hoping for another sell-out crowd of over 30,000
fans again on Saturday; ticket sales remain brisk and after the
Outlaws' home opener sell-out on February 3, over one thousand additional
season ticket packages were purchased. Yesterday and today
the stadium's parking lots were bustling with activity, prepping
the stadium for the game tomorrow. ScreenWorks arrived Thursday
to begin assembling the JumboTron screen, and NBC TV crews were
swarming everywhere, setting up equipment and running cables.
Rod Smart ("He Hate Me") has generated quite a bit of
interest, something that the Outlaws are using to their advantage.
On Wednesday, no less than 17 journalists had requested interviews
with Smart after practice! After practice Thursday, many players
were selected to begin taped interviews that will be shown during
the game Saturday. The game Saturday is hoped to be sped up
with shorter commercial breaks by NBC, as well as a few other improvements,
something that has raised a bit of concern. |
